Here we have chicken four ways:
1. About 4 litres of exceedingly flavourful stock
2. Gyoza-style dumplings with water chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms and ginger
3. Little pies with chicken, leek, field mushroom and allspice. Like the dumplings, they used mince made with the new toy.
4. Cute, tiny rooster in the guise of a hen who is yet to feel the surge of joy that comes with hearty early morning crowing and the wrath which consequently flows from the neighbours. (He’s the one in front. Well, he was.)

It does all look very tasty and impressive. And all that stock for soup season will be wonderful. Did you butcher the rooster?

I did try to warn you!
And Kirsty, the rooster appears in all four pictures.

Very jellus of your new toy.
Years ago almost bought a PALE BLUE 50′s one at the Salvos – dithered for a crucial second before someone else snapped it up.(Have repented in leisure)

Fairly evil, Pav:
This is the last rooster (also acquired by accident), I don’t have any pictures of this one grown up. Geez he was handsome, all strutting and glossy black and russet feathers.
And boynton, we got the mixmaster one by turning up to the preschool fete half an hour early and pretending to help. They were asking $5 for it.

I am SO impressed! You ate your rooster! And those pies look super-tasty.

Rebekka, I never told you I finally made that marvellous apple pie recipe of yours:
I also used the Frenchy jam with no added sugar in it, and it was exceedingly decadent.

Oh, those dumplings were yum. It was all I could do to hold back from scoffing the lot. I’m sure the pies worked just as well… were they chewier?

I can’t resist. Must pun.
It’s not the size of your cock, it’s how you wring the mincer that matters.
[short moment of shame]
I’m with Kate. Those gyoza are making me hungry.

Vegetarian for my health but those pies look delicious, on the other hand I don’t think I could eat something I’ve known personally. Pie does look nice.

hey, i’m impressed you got pies, dumplings and four whole litres of stock out of that spring chicken…did you feed him pate for the last month of his life or something? and are you like my mum who cries between bites when she occasionally has to eat her accidental roosters?
June 27th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
oh, and
WANT MORE LOLROOSTER

Oh yay, you made my pie!
One day I shall write a recipe book, and it shall have lovely pictures, and people shall purchase many copies of it, thus allowing me to quit my boring job and spend all day cooking tasty things and being paid far too much money to write a regular column for epicure.

Mmm. You sure you’re not a Liberal Party staffer? I mean to go from the cooked chook to the live chook – hen from pie? So it’s not which came first – chicken or egg then?

Well done getting so much stock out of one rooster! I hated eating mine. I mostly gave them away to friends who would eat them for me. We named them – Soup, Sandwich and Stew…

I couldnae eat the first one we had to kill, but I’ve hardened up a bit. He had a really very pleasant life beforehand.

ooo another chook person!
Alas our roosters met the same fate , except the boygroom had to do the deed, and we couldnt eat them after that traumatic event.
