With respect to the expression “as silly as a bum full of smarties”
We are having a bit of domestic discussion about this phrase, which seems to be from the movie “Kenny”.
Owen is of the view that the “bum” in question is a homeless alcoholic type who has found a full packet of smarties, consumed them, and gone off on a crazed blood sugar high. However, I think Owen is wrong and that his explanation amusingly shows up his hypochondriacal Virgoan tendencies. I think the truly stupid thing would be to stuff one’s rectum full of smarties. Now that is silly. Also, it is funny, whereas only Virgos think that indigent alcoholics having insulin attacks is the kind of thing that you would make up a joke about.
If anyone goes to those nerdy pedant sites and can nail the origins of this one for me, I’d be very grateful. Also happy to hear anything you’d care to make up.

Owen is wrong. I don’t know how many homeless drunks he’s had much contact with, but I can’t imagine many getting excited about smarties.
Or other people’s cavities, for that matter.

Yep, I definitely think you’re right on this one.
Isn’t the term “bum” for a homeless person more of an Americanism? Kenny’s humour is so stereotypically Australian, I’m sure he meant the more common Aussie use of “bum”: i.e. the rear-end kind, not the hobo kind.

yep bum is in wot yr sitting on, not as in how I feel after a quiet evening out with aforementioned owey and yep kenny but he may acquired that elsewhere c.f. muppet which i’m sure i heard b4 kenny used it.

the funniest part of it is the natural progression of imagining the sound of the smarties rattling around inside a bum and the sound of them shooting out.

Well, how silly would you have to be to put the smarties up your bum, instead of in your mouth?
Sticking your smarties in the wrong end is, I think, the idea behind this expression.
