Forgot to say I'm a big fan of Aldi dark chocolate. We do a huge shop for staples about once every 6 weeks, and then BB ducks in to his local store (within a ten minute walk from his office) for the specials. He got some electronic food scales the other day, and they can measure nutrition...

Second the motion for the new Lyneham shop. The only way I can remember the name is by thinking Chokos by Joe. It's called Choku Bai Jo, which I'm sure means something beautiful, but I don't know what.

No tea - real tea. Not those tea dust tampon things. No real tea. Bad. The muesli is good though.

And though the food miles may be shite, it's probably no worse than Woolies or Coles, & they certainly pay their producers better than either of the above do. But no tea.

& speaking of food - if in Canberra, please visit the new vegie/fruit mob up at North Lyneham shops near the Hockey Centre. Straight off farm, low food miles, organic and CHEAP. Bliss. I found a snail in me lettuce & smiled. They don't have tea either.

Cheap = good.

Huge foodmiles = not so good.

I'm still deciding.

in general, I find their lack of choice boring and frustrating - you can buy the staples there (and there's nothing much wrong with most of them) but you still have to go somewhere else for the rest of your grocery shopping... and I find that tedious. two grocery stores instead of just one... spare me.

their fruit and veg usually suck. blech.

their interesting stuff/specials are good to very good (but usually not quite excellent) quality - I've gotten some nice singlets, a small bookshelf, a tabbed curtain and a groovy spotted doona cover there. the $60 DVD player we got almost 4 years ago is great, apparently the latest version was only $35. I'm so unlucky I didn't see the unicycle advertised...

some of their seasonal confectionery/stuff from obscure bits of Europe are very good quality and pretty yummy.

If you subscribe to the Aldi email newsletters, you can be first in on the wondrous bargains they offer. So far 'we' have bought:

-- a wee little oxytorch, for the makings of creme brulee;

-- a unicycle;

--a coffee machine.

So far I haven't seen any creme brulee and the unicycle has been out once, but the coffee machine gets used on weekends. I don't drink coffee, but I've been told it works well.

'We' loves our local Aldi. Our cats don't, just like Laura's.

Thanks Laura, I was going to ask about the cat food. I won't go out of my way to shop there then. There has been talk of one opening in Yass, but nothing has been confirmed.

So, any budding ideas lately? Or should we say that you are now likely to evidence some woolliness in thinking?

Aldi: i also say yes, but I don't buy anything more bathroomy there than loo paper, so I can't comment on shampoo, cotton buds etc. The cats won't eat the cat food from there.

It is extremely cheap and because there is basically no choice about what to buy it is also very fast to do the shopping.
